1957 · 1983 · 2002 · 2021
Four dates carved into an unfinished mountain — scaffolding still up, ladders against the rock, the work plainly not done. Where the faces would be, there are none. Golf isn't finished, and nobody's likeness is for sale.
1957 — Torakichi Nakamura and Koichi Ono win the Canada Cup at Kasumigaseki, nine clear of Sam Snead and Jimmy Demaret. Japan had about 75 golf courses that year. By 1964 it had 424.
1983 — Isao Aoki stands 128 yards from the last at the Hawaiian Open, one behind. He holes it for eagle — the first Asian player ever to win on the PGA Tour.
2002 — K.J. Choi, a farmer's son from Wando island who took up golf at sixteen and learned it from Jack Nicklaus books, becomes the first South Korean to win on the PGA Tour.
2021 — Hideki Matsuyama wins the Masters. The first Japanese man to win a major, sixty-four years after Nakamura made his country care.
